With each member living in a different, far-flung location, the Winged Wheel collective sometimes breaks off in smaller configurations that reframe the greater vision of the band in new, more granular explorations. A trio version of Winged Wheel playing shows in August consists of Fred Thomas (Tyvek / Idle Ray), Steve Shelley (Sonic Youth / Orcutt Shelley Miller) and Cory Plump (Spray Paint / Tubby's). This stripped-back version of Winged Wheel will no doubt still bring the full band's unique lens on improvisation and deep listening, but it's a rare close up on the specific interplay that happens between these three players, isolated from the context of the larger group.
