JEFF TOBIAS ENSEMBLE + FREE SATIE

Jeff Tobias Ensemble

Jeff Tobias is a multi-instrumentalist and composer who has been an active part of the American music underground since 2003, known for his work with Modern Nature, Sunwatchers, Thee Reps, and many, many others. He has contributed to over one hundred physically released recordings, and his saxophone playing has been described as “authentically fearsome … just the sort of thing that fries microphones and never pays the rent.” (Bill Meyer, The Wire, March 2018). Jeff Tobias Ensemble is a new quartet performing songs from his new album One Hundredfold Now in This Age (Repeating Cloud), a collection of anti-imperialist avant-pop songs.

Free Satie

First performed at Panoply Performance Laboratory in 2014, the "Free Satie" Project springs from the practice of Brian McCorkle, bringing together a big band of musicians to play Satie's Trois Gnossiennes as "heads" for free improvisation. The project is always in flux, but currently the ensemble includes Bram Kincheloe (drums), Brian McCorkle (keyboard), Will McEvoy (bass), Ian Munro (organ), Peyton Pleninger (tenor sax), Dan Schwartz (drums), Aliza Simons (euphonium), George Winstone (alto sax), and Aaron Yanda (drums).
