Songwriter, vocalist, and producer Opal Hoyt is a conjurer and Zenizen is the result. On record P.O.C. (Proof of Concept), from 2022, is the first full-length, preceded by a handful of singles. Hoyt’s dry, lilting vocals, battery of electronics, and sampled field recordings are supplanted by a flowery ensemble brilliance, arrangements that fold in choral backing, saxophone burbles, and emphatically slinky rhythms. Despite all of these elements the output is tight and unfussy, emerging with natural, conversational grooves. It takes a lot of continual work for music to sound this effortless.
